COVID has had a profound effect on older adults. If they were “pre-frail” prior to the pandemic and have not been vigilant about protecting their health and strength, they could be entering the frail category. In other words, those whose main source of moving during their day consisted of running errands, going out to a restaurant, etc may not be getting even that level of activity during the pandemic.
The older we get, the more consistent we need to be with practicing balance and strength.
Try these options to start:
– sit to stands
– high knees/marching
– weight shifts from one leg to the other
Remember – if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you! Make sure your balance exercises leave you feeling a little off balance. Otherwise, you aren’t really training your balance!
