HOW IMPORTANT IS STRENGTH FOR FUNCTION IN OLDER ADULTS?

STRENGTH IS ONLY ONE COMPONENT!

There are 6 domains of function that need to be addressed when training an older adult.

COGNITIVE/EMOTIONAL
MOBITLITY
NEUROMUSCULAR
CARDIO RESPIRATORY
ENDURANCE
STRENGTH

In other words, strength is not the only answer to good function as we age.

In one study, some exercisers gained 40% more strength on the leg extension machine. Unfortunately, this does not translate to an easier time going up and down stairs, walking the dog, getting out of a car, etc.

Why? We are neglecting neuromuscular, balance, motor control and coordination!

What is the answer?
Incorporating the other elements into programming for every client.

One big piece of the puzzle which encompasses many aspects, including balance, coordination and motor control is POWER.

I’ve talked about power training in the past. It is basically strength X speed.

The Type 2 muscle fibers used in power moves are the quickest to decrease as we age. These faster movements correlate to reaction time – necessary to catch yourself if you trip on something or get you up the stairs.

Power movements can be scaled to any fitness level. Personally, I love incorporating medicine ball slams into my clients’ workouts!
